NIZAM COLLGE
Established in 1887 by the amalgamation of Hyderabad School and the Madarsa-i-Aliya, Nizam College is one of the oldest and most esteemed institutions of higher education in South India. It was affiliated to the University of Madras for 60 years after its inception, and was made a Constituent College of Osmania University on 19th February 1947.
DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY The department was established in the year 1887.The Faculty is competent and qualified according to UGC norms.
The Department of Zoology is one of the oldest departments in the college having 7 regular staff 9 Academic Consultants and 1 Part-Timers to cater to the needs of B.Sc. and M.Sc. teaching. This is also the Centre for Research, guiding the Ph.D. students. In B.Sc. III year, having strength of 45 students, Clinical Science is being offered as an Elective in V and VI Semesters. The M.Sc. strength is 48 with 2 batches. The Special Papers offered for Group-I, include Animal Physiology, Sericulture and Integrated Pest Management (IPM). For Group-II, Agricultural Entomology, Entomophilic Nematodes (EPN), Medical Entomology and Phytonematology are being offered. For Ph.D. students, the department is equipped and specialized in the areas of Entomology, Cell and Molecular Biology, Immunology and Entomophilic Nematodes. So far more than 35 scholars have taken PhD degree and published more than 250 research papers in national and international journals. Many research projects funded by DST and UGC have been carried out. Presently one minor project is also being carried out by Dr.VanithaDas.

Faculty Details


  • Course programmes were revised in 2008.
  • Applied Zoology (Fisheries) has been introduced in the year 2010 for UG III year students.
  • CBCS system is followed for PG students.
  • The Faculty as a part of Board of Studies is actively involved in constant review of the curriculum.
  • Success rate is 95%; Dropout rate: 2- 5% in B.Sc 1st year.
  • As a part of faculty development programmes during the past five years 04 permanent staff and AC’s have attended refresher courses and orientation courses.
  • Participation of teachers in academic activities other than teaching and research are as follows:
    1. As resource persons in refresher programs organized by different Institutions and Universities,
    2. as resource persons in workshops organized by different Institutions and Universities,
    3. as invited speakers in seminars, giving extension lectures in other education institutes.
  • Teachers are actively involved in various activities such as Additional Controller of Examinations, Student Counselors, Course Coordinators, Women Cell Coordinator, Hostel Vice -Principal.
  • The Department has Seminar Library with more than 3000 books in relevant areas and specializations.
  • Department has 24 computers with internet accessibility. Computer Laboratory was extended during 2010
  • Department has well equipped laboratories. Laboratories were remodeled and modernized during the year 2008-2009.
  • Modern teaching methods such as Lecture demonstration with the aid of LCD Projector and OHP monitor are constantly being practiced. Various guest lectures were organized such as
    1. Lectuer on “Animal Cell culture and Techniques” on 12-2-2009 by Dr. Nagendra, Manager R&D.Indian Immunologicals Ltd.Gachibowli.
    2. Interactive session for NSS Volunteers “Role of volunteers in Community participation and health” by Dr. Suresh Reddy B.C.Cancer center USA.
    3. Awareness programme on Butterfly conservation has been conducted on 7-8-2010 by Butterfly conservation Society.
    4. Basic Principles of Molecular biology by Ashwini Kumar Hyderabad Central University. On 17-8-2010.
  • Mentoring cell is established in 2010 to take care of the counseling.
  • Research is indeed a significant activity of the Department. The thrust areas are Entomology, Physiology and Parasitology.

  • Many students are qualified in national level exams like NET, SLET, GATE etc
  • The Faculty members were awarded 3 Minor Projects and one Major Project worth 22 lakhs.
  • Department also conducted a National seminar on “Agriculture, Development and Environment in collaboration with Jana Vignana Vedika an NGO.
  • Department often conducts field trips to NPPTI (Rajendranagar), Ecotrip to Dhoolapally Forest, ICRISAT, CCMB, IICT, Kamadanam –A.P.Sericulture and Research Training Centre.
  • Students are involved in various community based activities like blood donation camps, AIDS awareness programmes, cancer awareness programmes, counseling of terminally ill patients, etc.
  • Students are also actively involved in issues concerned with safe environment like recycling of waste paper, awareness on butterflies’ conservation and their importance, agriculture sustenance and development etc.
  • Department conducts two Internal Assessments for each Semester. Most of the students are well placed for instance, ten students are placed in Krishivignana Kendra at various places in the State and one student is working as Vector Biologist in Jharkhand.
  • Faculties are actively involved in research. Their achievements are:
    1. Best poster award at Indo-US Conference in 2008 and Best Paper presentation award at International Conference in Agra University in 2009 and BOYCOST fellowship for PDF in 2010 are awarded to Dr. J. Venkateshwar Rao.
    2. Best poster award at International seminar on Palliative care, Kochi, in 2008 to Dr. D. Priya Kumari.
    3. Dr. S. Venkataramana is awarded PDF by NSC in National Taiwan University – PAIPEI, Taiwan, RO.C, Department of Bioenvironmental Systems Engineering.
  • Students are involved in all academic and co curricular activities.
  • The Department resorts to innovative practices such as Student Seminars, Projects, and interdisciplinary Courses, conducting seminars, starting of in-house journal, development of research laboratories.
  • Dr. S. Sabita Raja and Dr. S. Padmaja have authored two text books published by Telugu Academy for B.Sc. II year students.
  • Dr. D. Priya Kumari has authored a book in telugu titled "Palliative care-Users manual for community volunteers" for usage of Medical professional, Community volunteers, lay public etc.
  • Dr.Vasudha Lingampally has authored three books which helps the students to appear for M.Sc. entrance (Zoology, Biotechnology) and B.Ed entrance.
  • Dr. N. Rajkumar has authored a book for EAMCET Entrance in Biology useful for the students of Centre for Educational Development of Minorities, Osmania University, sponsored by the Minorities Welfare Department, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh, Nizam College, Hyd.
  • Development and expansion plans of the department for the next 5 years are to develop more research activity in the department, more research equipment to be purchased.
